I know you're done with the hair stories and you already handed out the book but here's my late little anecdote- In college before I had locked my hair I was hanging out with my friend who never went to school with anyone non-white. Her family was visiting for the weekend and one of her younger siblings started brushing out my hair and it turned into a very large puffball. They proceeded to tell how my hair was like a squirrel's nest the rest of the night, and for the rest of year called me squirrel. I never thought about until years later, when she mentioned how jealous she was of my curls.
