True Confessions ... and Alain Clark

I have a confession. Promise you won't tell. Okay, here goes. I want to be a rock star. There I said it. I think there was some mixup with the man upstairs and he accidentally gave Mariah Carey MY voice. I have always dreamed of standing on a stage, microphone in hand, bringing tears to people's eyes with the beauty of my voice and the wisdom of my poetic lyrics. (sigh)

As I approach my 40th birthday (not this year, but it's coming sooner rather than later), one would think my rock star fantasies would dissipate, but they haven't. In fact, I've dusted off my guitar and am making my eight-year-old teach me everything he's learning from his guitar teacher. I've been twirling lyrics around in my head, and suddenly I've started paying more attention to music I hear that speaks to my soul. My kids think I'm crazy when I start blasting the radio in my car, begging them to "Really listen" to what the music is saying.

Now, it's true I don't have a very special singing voice. I can carry a tune, and I can blend in nicely in a chorus, but that's about it. But I can still dream, right? In fact, it's kind of fun to have this little secret of mine.

Do you have a little secret like that? Is there a dream you're still wishing on or better yet, trying to make happen? I want to hear about it.

In the meantime, check out this video I found by a singer I never heard of until yesterday, Alain Clark. I love him because he's from Haarlem, (No that's not a typo, he's from the original Haarlem in the Netherlands.), he's Mixed, and he loves his daddy. Oh, and the boy can sang! Tell me this isn't the cutest video ever and if you get a chance, check out more about Clark. I hope he makes a big splash in the United States.

Peace.

Hiya,
Awesome tip on the new music. And I await your combined album release and book tour! We'll cheer you on. You and Jason could tour after all.

And because I read you in my GoogleReader I've become a lurker. I'm decided this will be the year of comments.

I also had aspirations to be a singer--just in case the writing career didn't pan out. Not a rock star, but...an opera singer! Preferably a mezzo-soprano or even a coloratura. You know the famous ones like Denyce Graves, Rinat Shaham and Carla Dirlikov. Well, the latter two haven't been around as long as Denyce but you get my point. The other black opera singers are sopranos so I purposely left them out. Like Leontyne Price, Jessye Norman, Shirley Verrett...

Anyway, nearly everyone I know wants to be an actor. Opera is acting, in a sense. Instead of speaking the lines, the lines are sung.
