White Girls, Black Girls: Watch the Video

Hello Meltingpot Readers,

I'm only like ten days late to the party, but I finally watched the viral video that's gotten the whole world talking about race relations between White girls and Black girls. If you're as far removed from YouTube as I am and haven't seen the video, take a peek.

Okay, what did you think? Me? I am still laughing. I just think it's high-larious, mostly because almost everything parodied in the video, I've had someone say to me. That's what makes it funny to me, because I can totally relate. I've heard some people find the clip racist, which I think is misguided. I can understand  if people might think it's offensive, but not racist. Mostly, I hope the video simply does what Franchesca Ramsey intended, which is to get people comfortable talking about race. (Thanks This Nigerian-American Life for making me finally watch.)

So, dear readers, what's your take on the video? Is it funny or does it offend? Is it any worse than the average stand-up comedy routine? Do you think it will have any effect on race relations between Blacks and Whites? And why have four million people tuned in to watch?

I'm listening.

Peace!

Thanks for the mention! :)

Also, for the people who might question the filmmakers motives, Francesca talks about her experiences as a black woman with waist-length locs working in corporate America in a Huffington post column.

I am not offended. There is no reason to be. People say dumb shit all the time. Only if we talk about it with humor, can we begin to have an honest dialog.

Check out this picture, http://nextround.net/2011/12/how-to-catch-a-white-person

I am a white person and I love Nutella. I lol'ed

I'm definitely not offended; I love Francesca's comedy! In fact, I might even make a "Things White Europeans Say...To Black Girls" video, if only to show how ridiculous some of these comments can get!

TNAL,
You're most welcome.

Anon,
I agree. Humor is a great pacifier.

FD,
I hear you! Please do it.

Hilarious!

I think Francesca's and the Shit Black Girls Say are the best tributes to the original video.

I thought the vid was absolutely hilarious and oh so true! I think that those that don't find it offensive mostly feel that way because they can relate to the scenarios being portrayed. I think it's clever and kind of takes away the "awkward moment" feeling that presents itself when these comments are actually exchanged in reality. This was clever; let's all laugh a little! ;-)

I loved it and cried so hard (at all of the videos: gay, asian, spanish, etc) that I cried.

I am totally addicted to these "Sh!T People Say videos!" A lot of them are hilarious and show us the disconnect we sometimes have as humans. Hopefully through the laughter we can learn something and be more understanding and tolerant of each other. I think this video is one of my favorites. I have been on the receiving end of a lot of the comments in the video!

It is absolutely pathetic how white people go out of their way to defend and reinforce stereotypes against white people and at the same time insist that "history" demands that white people never do anything that would be considered offensive to black people.

That isn't being a 'anti racist', that is just straight up uncle tomming.

In other words, of course this isn't THAT racist, but we all know that black people would never allow a white person to get away with doing the same thing and take credit for bring up race in a conversation at the same time.
