Shame on You Dr. Laura!

Hi Meltingpot Readers,

So I'm still maintaining the buzz of the big "Pub day" for Substitute Me. Thank you all for your sweet encouragement, your blog reviews, tweets and well wishes. I feel so happy. But that happiness can't keep me from getting hot under the collar by the outrageous behavior by that woman who calls herself Dr. Laura.

I barely knew who Dr. Laura was, but I couldn't ignore the constant media attention given to her recent reported spewing of the n-word on national radio. So of course, I had to investigate. Here's a a story from abc news that apparently covered the "controversy."

But of course mainstream media got the story all wrong. In my opinion. Yes, Ms. Laura was way too comfortable using the n-word, in fact she seemed to enjoy it, but what was truly reprehensible about the situation, was the advice she gave to the caller who was calling with a legitimate problem. The caller was a Black woman married to a White man. Apparently the White husband's White friends and family often made racist comments around the wife and her husband didn't stick up for her and she wanted to know how to handle it. Now, why this woman decided to call Dr. Laura for help is beyond me, but she did. And Dr. Laura's response was --I'm paraphrasing -- "stop being so hypersensitive. You shouldn't have married outside of your race if you couldn't handle such situations!!!!!" Excuse me?

Here's a link to the whole disgraceful transcript so you can see for yourself how racist this woman really is. Yes, I said it. I think Dr. Laura is a very racist human being who should take herself to therapy to see why she harbors so much negative energy towards Black people. Maybe she can do this now that she's going to be out of a job :)

And I ask myself, why is this woman popular? Why do people listen to her? What is her appeal? Somebody please help me understand.

I am listening with both ears.

Peace

When Dr. Laura started her show, she would actually discuss her moral stance, its origins within her religion, and how it applied more broadly to the callers situation.

As the years went on, she moved to shouting hand-picked callers down and explaining why they weren't really bright enough to do it right. (Note: this degradation of her "performance" had mostly occurred by the late 90s, which is the last time I was exposed to her on a regular basis.)

I have no idea why she continues to enjoy such a following. Heck, in the late 90s I couldn't figure out why these people were calling her for advice about their lives. It was pretty obvious they generally weren't coming from the same religious/moral background and hadn't really thought at all about applying those religious/moral standards to their behavior up to this point.

When I noticed all the attention she was getting on Twitter (I live in Venezuela), I googled and found the transcript too. Then I went and listened to the whole conversation on one of the news websites. Boy, was it bad! I couldn't understand why the caller had even bothered contacting her for an opinion. This woman clearly has an antagonistic tone and from the beginning did not take the woman's issue seriously. I also read her apology and thought it was too little, too late. But hey, if people still want to listen to her show, that's their prerogative. They now have a better idea of the person they're supporting.

I am so happy that the ugly (inside and out) crazy old gym teacher reaped what she had sowed. She could have gotten her argument across by saying “N word” and not using the word and by not saying “don’t NAACP me” but like Michael Richards AKA “Cosmo Kramer”, she ends up the trash heap of history, a history of her own making. I am so happy that the free market AKA sponsors started to pull their ads (I guess they were exercising their free speech) and she finally realized that she was just another “run of the mill gabby” and her days were numbered. She realized that she was not as smart as she thought she was, finally! The first three times she used the word might not have been in anger but the last eight she was filled with hate, so good riddance.

Palin was the one who got bent over the use of the word “Retard” (she wanted some fired?), Palin also said that the people have the right to build the Mosque in NY, but out of respect for the 9/11 families they shouldn’t, but I guess this same standard is not applicable to Laura Schlessinger. Do you see the hypocrisy? The problem with Palin is the same when she mistakenly referred to Ronald Reagan Eureka College, being in California and we all know its in Illinois, same thing, she does not fact check anything she is going to say. She is soooo Palin!
